This opera has really been a whole Car-lotta to process!

In all seriousness, performing in the US premiere of this opera amidst everything going on in Los Angeles, including having to evacuate on the night of our final dress rehearsal, has been incredibly surreal. I’m grateful to have been amongst supportive colleagues and to have had the privilege to focus on making and sharing art during such a traumatic time in our city’s history.

There are three more opportunities to see this @seewhatishaw production with @pacoperaproj. Hopefully it won’t be another 247 years until its next performance !

Lil post audition dump 🥯 🚕

It’s been several YEARS since I have auditioned, and tbh I had no real plans to seek any out if it had not been for the recommendation of another Emily (🩷 @emilygeller). So I pulled myself out of audition retirement for another whack at it. 🔨

This was a really big moment for me to follow through on something that I could have much more easily avoided 😬 however I’m proud to share that today actually felt really good, and I might have even been a little excited 🥳🙌🏻

Nothing may come of this audition but I’m still left feeling happy and incredibly grateful for the wonderful support system of colleagues, friends, and loved ones, paired w some classic DIY Kiwi attitude, that have helped me get back to this space 🙏🏻🥰

That’s a wrap, we are now Done Bucefalo! 🥖 🍝

I had an absolute ball stomping on some grapes, and mucking around with my new pals both on stage and off ! The whole cast were incredible, a joy to watch, and the opera was so silly and refreshing to perform.

Hopefully, it won’t be another 160 years before its next performance - although, good luck finding a better Don B than @armando_m_contreras 😂

This is the first time Cagnoni’s Don Bucefalo has been performed in the US since 1867! It’s being held at The Garibaldina, the oldest Italian society in America, who actually lent us some of their traditional garb for the show 💃
This opera is super silly and charming and the cast are phenomenal 🇮🇹 🍝 roll up if you can

A role I’m working on atm shares a few commonalities to this classic: both operas were written around the same period - one may have even inspired the other(!), the composer was a contemporary (or adversary 🤔) of Mozart, and both plots feature some very jealous lovers!

Cinderella Story 💜 And they all lived Happily Ever After

As things wind down after the final performance last Sunday, I am left feeling super grateful that these wonderful, hilarious humans will always be associated with my first Pacific Opera Project experience.

I had really missed that electric intensity which happens when a gaggle of new faces, personalities, and voices, come together and bond throughout the process of creating a new show (in only a few short weeks).

I’ll miss the hangs and banter but also know that we are all going onto other marvelous things. May our paths cross again soon 🪄

#tbt to my first on-camera acting experience earlier this year 🎥

In March, I was asked to record Rachmaninov’s Vocalise for a film highlight reel about Russian opera singer, Nina Koshetz. Nina was a beloved singer who had an incredible career in Russia working with some of their greatest composers, including Rachmaninov, with whom she was rumored to be muse, mistress, and MAYBE even baby mama 🫖 👀. Nina ended up fleeing her home for America during the height of the Russian Revolution where she remained until her death.

Long story short, I came to audition for the vocals but ended up being offered the role of Nina. It was a super unexpected but rewarding experience.

Shout out to @julia_behbudov for her patient practice sessions that allowed me to obtain some semblance of a Russian accent, and @the.other.dan.stevens who coached me through the acting side of things. Working with Dan was encouraging, challenging, thought-provoking, and instrumental in knowing what to expect, and also what would be expected of me. I felt so much better prepared having had the opportunity to work with him.

I’m also grateful to the film crew, and my on-screen colleagues, for being so kind and welcoming towards such a complete noob.

It’s been over a week now and I’m still trying to process my time @schegginoopera.

Feeling incredibly fortunate to have worked with amazing colleagues, devoured delicious food, debuted a little Puccini, strolled ancient people-packed streets, and enjoyed solo walks along pathways flittering with butterflies.

For a gal from NZ, it was truly a dream come true to travel for the purpose of performing. May this be just the beginning!

#tbt to the time I was on New Zealand’s version of Sesame Street! Moe was having trouble projecting his voice and decided to visit New Zealand Opera to get some advice.

Moe also attended my performance of La cenerentola in my hometown of Auckland. Super excited to relive this role and finally be crowned the most beautiful girl at the ball (as long as my goody two-shoes stepsister stays home this time)! 👀

This is me back when I made my debut as Clorinda (one of Cinderella’s terribly underappreciated stepsisters) in the New Zealand Opera production of La Cenerentola.
I was a young artist with the company and understudying the role, when one night the lead was unable to go on. Fast forward to 24 hours later and I was hopping on stage with the VERY seasoned cast hoping against heck not to mess up anyone’s stuff!

It was one of the coolest, scariest, most memorable performance experiences of my life and has continued to fuel my passion for this art form.

I’m super excited to dust off parts of this role (and see if I remember my Rossini patter) for a show coming up in September. More to come but for now enjoy the mystery - it worked for Cinderella 👠

Throwback to one of my fave trios of all time; Sing For Your Supper (too on the nose 🤔), from Rogers/Hart “The Boys from Syracuse”. I love this piece so much cause it’s tongue in cheek, surprisingly challenging in spots, and delightfully fun to ham up with your birdie cohorts.

Season

Australian-New Zealand soprano Emily Scott has been praised for her "full, rich voice" (Long Beach Press Telegram) and called an "emerging star of New Zealand opera" (The New Zealand Herald). She begins her 2024/25 season locally as Clorinda in Pacific Opera Project's musical revue A Cinderella Story. She goes on to perform a recital of Operatic Favorites for The Opera Buffs, and as a featured soloist with the Long Beach Catalyst Ensemble's Sondheim Revue. In 2025, she makes her role and house debuts with Pacific Opera Project as Carlotta in the United States premiere of Salieri's La scuola de' gelosi, and later with Opera Italia as Musetta (La boheme). In October she will also be featured as part of the Pacific Opera Project artist recital series.

In the 2023/24 season, Emily performed in concert as a soloist for the Long Beach Symphony in Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music, with whom she also covered the soprano soloist for their Brahms Requiem. On stage she made her European and role debuts with Scheggino Opera as Magda in an abridged version of Puccini's La rondine, and as Assistant A in Womb with a View for New Opera West's Pop-Up Opera.
